Happy Tummy Cafe, Church Street, Rhmond
I had some time to kill whilst waiting for my car to be serviced and decided to get a coffee. Considering I was in Richmond I thought it wouldn’t be too difficult. I was near the intersection of Swan and Church, found a place that looked OK.
Coffee was ordered; I took a seat and picked up a magazine. There were two other people and a distinct lack of atmosphere . Still, I wasn’t going to be there long and besides, there was coffee to look forward too.
But then the cup was placed in front of me. It didn’t look good. It looked thin; there was no crema and sure enough, it tasted bitter.
Sigh. Wasn’t I in Melbourne, in inner city Richmond? Then how come I’m being served coffee that I could make just as badly at home?
I drank it (in the vain hope it would improve with each sip - it didn’t), paid and left. I found myself back out on the streets but now feeling somewhat cheated out of my morning coffee ritual.
Yep, I had killed time but it left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.
Are we becoming obsessed with coffee? Now, I’m the first to admit I enjoy my daily cafe latte but I alway prefer tea in the afternoon. However I despair of good tea at work, all those dusty teabags sitting in a box. Much like instant coffee. Too strong and bitter. And I feel distinctly ripped off paying for a cup of tea when all they’ve done is thrown a tea bag into some hot water. My mother always said you need to make a cup tea with “expression”. I grew to understand what she meant. So I think I will always take tea at home on the lawn whilst ringing the bell for the cucumber sandwiches but go out to some funky, edgy cafe for my fix of espresso.

I bought a Bokashi bucket after reading it was ideal for people composting who live in units, etc with not enough space for a regular compost bin. Only thing is you still have to get rid of the organic matter by either digging it into the garden or a compost bin, both of which I don’t have. So I still need to find someone with a garden and dig it in. Has anyone else found this? And what do you do? Has anyone thought of a communal compost in their neighbourhood? Just thinking out loud now.

My friends are trying different pubs to hang around in on Sunday afternoons. Criteria : inner city/northern suburbs, guinness on tap essential, decent pub tucker, good atmosphere (ie no pokies!) and preferably close to public transport.
