Killer coffee

Happy Tummy Cafe, Church Street, Rhmond

I had some time to kill whilst waiting for my car to be serviced and decided to get a coffee. Considering I was in Richmond I thought it wouldn’t be too difficult. I was near the intersection of Swan and Church, found a place that looked OK.

Coffee was ordered; I took a seat and picked up a magazine. There were two other people and a distinct lack of atmosphere . Still, I wasn’t going to be there long and besides, there was coffee to look forward too.

But then the cup was placed in front of me. It didn’t look good. It looked thin; there was no crema and sure enough, it tasted bitter.

Sigh. Wasn’t I in Melbourne, in inner city Richmond? Then how come I’m being served coffee that I could make just as badly at home?

I drank it (in the vain hope it would improve with each sip - it didn’t), paid and left. I found myself back out on the streets but now feeling somewhat cheated out of my morning coffee ritual.

Yep, I had killed time but it left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

I hate crap coffe and always take it back and make whoever make me a proper cup, there is no excuse for a rubbish cup of coffee especially if you are charging for it.

Thanks for that. To know where not to go is useful information. My test of a good place is the number of people sitting and sipping coffee. Where I live in Glen Huntly you just go to Whyte Cafe Bar. They know what they are doing and its a great place to also eat and chat .

Funny you should say Richmond, as I had coffee at an organic cafe last week………serivce is something of the past thats for sure !!! Smiles are damn expensive.
My pet hate with cafes, is when you ask for skinny milk, they think you wont know the difference and give you full cream. Especially if youve ordered cake, they think youre trying to be on a diet. Full cream milk in cappucinos actually leaves a foul taste and makes me feel sick for a couple of hours later. One guy actualy told me once that skinny milk killed a capucino and he refused to put it in. Needless to say, I dont ever go there anymore !!

Great coffee in a tiny cafe, next to Borders Clearing Section, near the Nova theatre in Carlton though…I’d rather no coffee than bad stuff….my sympathies…..hoped the car worked fine though….

No better way to spoil a good morning than a bad cup of coffee! We need a good barista list for every suburb - because these days I am much more likely to navigate by coffee shops when it used to be by pubs! :) Hope your next coffee made up for it.
